My name is Terri Huber. I am married and have three children. Prior to tutoring, I worked 30+ years in the technology field. I was fortunate to be able to leave my first career to pursue my passion for teaching.
When our youngest child was in elementary school, my husband and I knew from the beginning that she was not on the same reading level as the other children in her class. We had her tested and she was diagnosed with dyslexia. What that means is she has difficulty hearing some sounds; she had to be taught HOW to 'sound out' words. In addition, it takes slightly longer for her to process what she reads or hears before she can respond.
We found the Barton Reading & Spelling system, which was designed by Susan Barton specifically to target teaching people who have dyslexia how to decode words, improve spelling and read with more fluency. I started with tutoring our daughter back in 2008 and expanded part time with other students. I am now able to tutor full-time and looking to take on new students.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Professional Management and a Masters in Business Administration. When I decided to pursue tutoring as my second career, I went back to school to become a certified teacher through the State of Florida. In addition, I have attended seminars hosted by Susan Barton to become a Barton certified reading tutor and am on the list of approved tutors for the professional organization, Learning Ally.
